Brotherly Love

My brother Tony was one of my favorite people ever. If I could choose who to spend time with on the weekend or just to hang out, it was with my brother. He had the greatest sense of humor and always knew how to make me laugh.

He ended up having colon cancer and was given five months to live, but through the resources of alternative medicines he made it through ten years. His humor rarely failed him and I’ve never known anyone who could stay as positive as he did throughout the ordeal.

The challenges were monumental and would have caused anyone to be angry, sad, frustrated or depressed. But if he ever exhibited those feelings, he never showed them to me nor to anyone else. I’ve never known anyone so patient or so brave.

I wanted so much more for him. I didn’t have enough time, love, laughter or hugs. Our time together was too short.

Just before he passed away he gave me this card with a golden dove embossed on it. The card read:

“The light of God surrounds us

The love of God enfolds us

The power of God protects us

The presence of God watches over us

Wherever we are,

God is!”

I am not a religious person but I am spiritual. There is a deep level of serenity in those words and believing my brother discovered serenity before his passing makes my heart soar.
